THE 500th kiwi chick to hatch at Rainbow Springs kiwi centre was yesterday introduced to its 90ha creche at Bushy Park.
Rima Rau, whose egg was taken from Taranaki, hatched at the Rotorua incubation centre about three weeks ago, the 500th hatched since the specialist kiwi recovery programme began about three years ago.

The beautiful tieke (saddleback) is now a resident in the
bush reserve. In May two teams of thirteen volunteers
from the Trust, DoC, and Massey University made visits
to Mokoia Island in Lake Rotorua to translocate these
rare birds to Wanganui.
Several years ago members of Mokoia Island Trust visited
Bushy Park and agreed that it would be an excellent place
for some of their saddlebacks.
Jo Thorne, who spent a year as a Vodafone World of
Difference scholar doing kiwi work, convened the whole
project which resulted in thirty four birds being released
on June 19th. They appear to have settled in well and
since they are prolific breeders it is expected that within
a few years a good population will be a great attraction
for visitors as this is only the second population of tieke
on the North Island mainland. The project was funded
by a generous grant from WWF-NZ for which we are
most grateful.
